A 24-year-old man allegedly attempted suicide at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai on Monday after he was detained by immigration officers over a LoC (look out circular) issued against him by the Karnataka police in a cyber stalking case.

According to police, Mohammed Afreed arrived at the Mumbai airport from Dubai via an Indigo flight 6E 1512 on Monday morning. He was detained on suspicion and was asked to sit in the immigration arrival room while his travel documents were being verified.

After verifying his credentials, immigration officer Sonakshi Sankar produced Afreed before her senior officer and informed him that there was an LoC against him by the Karnataka police in a criminal case registered under sections 354D (stalking) of the Indian Penal Code and 66C (identity theft) and 66D (cheating by impersonation using computer resources) by the Siddapura police station in Kodagu district in 2023.

The senior immigration officer verified the LoC and made Afreed sit in the office of the immigration wing in charge. While the officer got busy with the procedure of handing over the suspect to the Sahar police, Afreed allegedly slit his left wrist with a sharp object, police said.
He was given primary treatment by an airport doctor and was later rushed to the ICU of Cooper Hospital.

“We have registered a case under Section 309 (attempts to commit suicide) of the Indian Penal Code and served him a notice as it is a bailable offence,” said Dhananjay Sonawane, senior inspector of Sahar police station. After treatment, police took Afreed to Karnataka.
