A Kandivali-based businessman has filed a police complaint against four persons for allegedly cheating him of Rs 82 lakh under the pretext of providing his son a seat in Pune’s JB Medical College for MD (radiation) course.

To defraud the businessman, the accused persons gave him bogus NEFT payment acknowledgements showing payment towards college fee, a bogus certificate in the name of the college’s dean, ID card etc. Borivali police on Wednesday registered an FIR and is further investigating the case.

The complainant ‘s son had cleared MBBS in 2019. He secured 199 points in NEET for admission to pursue a masters degree, but was not able to secure a seat in any prestigious medical college. His father too tried hard to secure a seat for him through the management quota, but in vain.

In 2022, the complainant businessman met Sandeep Waghmare through a common friend, Akhilesh. Waghmare promised to secure admission for his son in an Aurangabad college through the NRI quota. Following this, Waghmare introduced the complainant to Abhijeet Patil and Anil Tambat, wherein the latter promised to secure admission in a government medical college through government quota and guided the aspiring student through some formalities.

Thereupon, on July 10 the complainant’s son received an email from deanbjmcpune@gmail.com informing him that he had secured admission to BJ Medical College Pune with the roll number 2166086933, the FIR states.

Following this, Tambat asked the father-son duo to submit relevant documents with Waghmare in Pune. The complainant’s son and his friend met Waghmare outside the college in Pune and submitted the documents. Saying the admission process was successful, he then asked them to pay up Rs 1.7 crore for his services.

Over the next three months, the complainant gave Anil Tambat, Abhijeet Patil, Sandeep Waghmare and Bhushan Patil a total of Rs 1.36 crore, the complaint states.

Meanwhile, Abhijeet Patil gave an ID card and the dean’s letter to the complainant’s son.

A few days later, the complainant while speaking to his friend learnt that Tambat was a cheat and dupes people under the pretext of providing admission. This friend’s son too had paid a huge amount to Tambat for admission to a college, but had managed to compel Tambat to refund the full amount, a police officer said.

The complainant was shocked to hear this, and immediately confronted Tambat, who admitted to have sent him forged documents and promised to fully refund the money.

Tambat and the other accused returned Rs 54 lakh to the complainant, but when the complainant consistently pushed him to return his money, Tambat abused him and refused to return the rest. Following this the complainant approached the police.
