Jodhpur-based jeweller held for stealing ornaments from temples

The Mumbai Police Tuesday arrested a jeweller from Rajasthan’s Jodhpur who was allegedly involved in thefts of silver ornaments from temples in Mumbai.

According to a police official, the 24-year-old accused, Kapil Brijmohan Soni, found temples easy targets. Soni was arrested after he allegedly broke into a temple in Mangaldas Market area in South Mumbai on September 22 and made away with a silver Shivling and other silver ornaments weighing around 3 kg, valued at approximately Rs 3 lakh.

After the accused was identified, team from LT Marg police was dispatched to Jodhpur. Acting on specific inputs, they detained Soni from his residence and brought him to Mumbai on transit remand.

As per police, his arrest helped crack at least half a dozen similar offences, including three temple theft cases. Of the six offences, Soni was allegedly involved in three previous silver theft cases registered under the jurisdiction of LT Marg police.

Soni is a resident of Bhadwasia Mahadev Mandir area in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, and has a jewellery shop there.

Preliminary investigations also suggest that the accused had visited multiple areas in Mumbai, including VP Road, Juhu, Andheri, DN Nagar, and Bhoiwada, where silver thefts were reported in the past. Further investigation is on.
