The Powai police in Mumbai booked two men on Tuesday on charges of cheating and forgery after one of them appeared on behalf of the other to clear an online examination before securing a job at the Bank Note Press (BNP) in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh.

Officers identified the accused as Sharwan Kumar and Deepak Kumar, who appeared for the examination posing as Sharwan.

According to the police, the online examination was conducted in Powai in 2021, and after due verification of the documents, one of the accused was recruited in November 2021 as a junior technician at BNP. However, the fraud came to light during a verification drive this year when it was found that the actual employee’s face did not match that of the person who appeared for the examination.

An officer from Powai police said that a joint general manager from the HR department of BNP approached them in May this year and submitted a written complaint against the employee for acquiring government jobs through fraud and cheating.

The police said BNP Dewas had advertised direct recruitment to 135 posts, including that of junior technician (electrical and IT), in May 2021. The examination was conducted online on August 2, 2021, and the selected candidate was called for a document verification between September 13 and October 25, 2021. Sharwan had appeared for the document verification and was found eligible for the post of junior technician. He was given an appointment letter and joined as a junior technician in November 2021.

This year, BNP Dewas started a document verification drive for candidates hired through direct recruitment over the last five years. During this, it was found that the photographs captured by the software during an examination held in August 2021 at ION Digital Zone, Powai, clearly showed that Sharwan had not appeared in the exam. Further investigation found that it was Deepak who appeared in the exam fraudulently, the police said.

On being questioned, Deepak allegedly confessed that Sharwan had paid him Rs 15,000 for appearing in the examination so he could secure the government job. “The evidence was gathered and submitted. We have been conducting further investigation,” said a police officer at Powai station.
