A man was arrested in Maharashtra’s Jalna district recently for allegedly killing his teenage son and attempting to pass it off as suicide over the Maratha reservation.
The accused, Mahadev Thute, reportedly strangled his son Shivprasad, 19, in a fit of rage and under the influence of alcohol and attempted to cover up the murder by hanging the body from a ceiling fan. Mahadev Thute also purportedly wrote a fake suicide note to portray that his son died by suicide for the cause of the Maratha reservation.
The Tirthapuri police in Jalna district arrested Mahadev Thute under Indian Penal Code sections pertaining to murder and destroying evidence.
According to the police, the incident took place on February 23 this year, when the police had received a complaint that their son Shivprasad committed suicide by hanging himself over the demanding the reservation for Maratha community.
The body was taken to the hospital for postmortem and viscera samples were sent for examination. It was then found that there were marks around the neck which did not result from hanging.
“During the probe, it was revealed that the father and the son had an argument over some family issues, and in a fit of rage the former strangled his son,” said a police officer.
“The accused has confessed to the crime. The death did not take place due to the Maratha reservation issue. The father had strangled his son to death under the influence of alcohol,” said Sajid Ahmad, the police inspector, Tirthpuri police.
The Maratha reservation issue took centre stage in state politics in September last year when the police resorted to lathi-charge and used tear gas to rein in quota activists in Jalna’s Antarwali village. The government came under fire from Opposition leaders, who extended support to the agitation led by Maratha quota activist Jarange-Patil.
Thereafter, the government initiated talks with Jarange-Patil and issued a government resolution promising to give Kunbi caste certificates to Marathas whose ancestors were described as Kunbi in Nizam-era documents. This has allowed Marathas from the state’s Marathwada region to avail of quota benefits under the OBC category.
