Inspector held for extortion,hunt on for 2 cops

The Dindoshi police on Tuesday arrested a police sub-inspector attached to the Sewree police station and are on the lookout for two constables for allegedly extorting ornaments worth Rs 17 lakh and cash totalling Rs 7 lakh from a Malad-based businessman.

The Dindoshi police on Tuesday arrested a police sub-inspector (PSI) attached to the Sewree police station and are on the lookout for two constables for allegedly extorting ornaments worth Rs 17 lakh and cash totalling Rs 7 lakh from a Malad-based businessman.

PSI Prashant Mane and constables Laad and Chauhan had allegedly approached the complainant,Mohammed Asif Shaikh,along with two other accused,who were pretending to be Mumbai Police Crime Branch officers. They allegedly extorted the ornaments and cash from him by threatening to arrest him.

The Crime Branch arrested the two fake police officers,Akbar Shaikh (36),Abhishek (34),and their informer Salman Khan (22). According to inspector Sopan Chaudhury from the Dindoshi police station,Khan had informed the two fake officers that Mohammed,whom he is related to,had a large amount of cash in his house. Meanwhile,Abhishek,who was Mane’s informer,told the PSI about the matter.

Mane then allegedly worked out a plan and approached the complainant along with the constables and the two fake Crime Branch officers on August 23. They told Mohammed that he was dealing with hawala money and they could get him arrested,the police said. The accused then allegedly extorted the ornaments and cash from him.

“The accused told Mohammed not to inform other policemen about the incident. On Sunday,the accused again called Mohammed and told him to give them more money and threatened him not to inform the police. Mohammed suspected foul play and registered a case against with the Dindoshi police,” said Chaudhury.

The Crime Branch arrested three accused on Monday and handed them over to the police. “Abhishek revealed that Mane was involved in the deal. On Tuesday,we arrested Mane and are now on the lookout for the two constables involved.”
