Indian Derby on April 5

The most sought after event of the Mumbai Racing Season,the Indian Derby,will be run on April 5. The constrained season which begins on January 31,will end on May 3. Besides,Pune will be hosting one of the five Classic races.

“The first classic the Indian 1000 Guineas will be run on March 1 which will be followed by 2000 Guineas on March 8,” informed Vivek Jain,the chairman of the stewards,Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) on Thursday. “The Indian Oaks will be held on March 29 which will be preceded by Poonawalla Breeders’ Multi-Million on March 22 but the final Classic,the Indian St. Leger,will be held in Pune,” Jain added.

Jain said despite many ups and down and a curtailed season cards,sponsors have chosen to honour their commitments. “The season will be as colourful as ever in terms of pomp and show,” he said.

The horses from Pune will start moving to the Mahalaxmi Race Course next week. “I met with the secretary of the Animal Husbandry Department and he has assured that the notification about movement and conduct of the races will be issued in couple of day as it is pending with legal department now,” informed Jain.

“So we expect the horse will start coming in from January 19.”

The Mumbai season now looks firmly in saddle with the prospectus for the first two days of racing on January 31 and February 1 has been approved and event the entries have started coming in.

Most of the 1200-odd horses have started track work in right earnest in Pune and will be ready to run once they arrive in Mumbai.
