Jayakwadi dam overflow: The inflow into the Jayakwadi dam on the Godavari River in Marathwada surged, prompting authorities to open all 27 gates, releasing 1,25,000 cusecs. Nearly 7,000 people were evacuated in Paithan of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, where Harsul Circle recorded 196 mm of rain in 24 hours. Heavy rains also lashed Beed, Nanded and Parbhani districts.

Spurred by heavy showers throughout recent weeks, Mumbai has already recorded 606 mm of rain this month, making it the city’s second wettest September since 2021. Following torrential rain over the weekend, the showers are slated to recede gradually with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) sounding no alerts in the city, starting Tuesday.
Amid a red alert sounded in the region, several pockets of Mumbai received over 100 mm of rain between Sunday and Monday morning. Records from the weather bureau showed that in the 24 hours till 8.30 am on Monday, the IMD’s Colaba coastal observatory registered 101.2 mm of rain while the Santacruz observatory received 77.5 mm.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s automatic weather stations, the heaviest downpour was recorded in the western suburbs at an average of 99.44 mm of rain, followed by an average of 80 mm in the eastern suburbs, and 74 mm in the island city division. Read

Police said he slipped into an uncovered chamber while playing and was swept away. His body was recovered after an hour-long search. The incident sparked outrage among locals, who accused the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) of negligence and demanded a culpable homicide case against its officials for failing to maintain drain covers. In Dharashiv district’s Telgaon Pimpalgaon village, dairy farmer Shriram Datkhile lost 37 cows, 20 goats, and his guava orchard after floods on September 23 destroyed his family’s dairy business, once earning Rs 3.5 lakh a month. With losses estimated at Rs 60 lakh, the family now lives in an onion shed, while government compensation norms cover only three cattle at Rs 37,500 each.
An NGO, Shivaar, reported receiving 274 distress calls from farmers in rain-battered Marathwada, with 83 expressing suicidal thoughts due to crop and cattle losses, debt, and inadequate aid. Cases included farmers in Latur and Nanded losing large herds, facing mounting debts, and being denied cattle insurance due to lumpy skin disease. (PTI)

As heavy rain lashed Mumbai and Maharashtra over the last 24 hours, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) data shows that the overall water stock in all seven lakes that supply water to the city stood at 97.57 per cent on Monday morning.
Mumbai draws its water from Tansa, Bhatsa, Tulsi, Vihar, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna and Modak Sagar lakes. Even though the lakes reached full capacity last week, the water stock has been hovering between 95 and 99 per cent daily, failing to reach the 100 per cent mark despite the heavy rainfall recorded in Mumbai, as a massive amount of excess water gets washed away.
Of the seven lakes, Tulsi and Vihar are located within Mumbai, while the others are in the satellite districts of Palghar, Thane and Nashik. The full quantum of water stored in these lakes stands at 14.47 lakh million litres. Maharashtra Rains Weather Today Live Updates: Nanded expected to experience thunderstorms from September 30 to October 3
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds at isolated places across Nanded from September 30 to October 3.
The weather bureau has also predicted heavy rainfall at isolated places in Ratnagiri from October 1 to 3.
Ghats of Satara, Pune and Nashik will receive heavy rainfall today, the IMD has said.

Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Monday indicated that farmers affected by excess rainfall and floods in the state could receive compensation before Diwali.
'The real picture of damage caused by the floods will be available by October 5. We will definitely try to give financial assistance to farmers before the Diwali season. There are enough administrative provisions to provide aid to farmers,' Bawankule told reporters here.
The Diwali period begins with Dhanteras on October 18 and goes on till Bhai Dooj on October 23.
He also said compensation under National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) norms would not be sufficient, as farmers have sought higher assistance.
The state government will take steps to ensure that farmers get more than what is prescribed under the NDRF, Bawankule asserted. --PTI
