On Friday, Mumbai sizzled on its hottest January day since 2016 as the maximum temperature soared to 36 degrees Celsius, which is over 5 degrees above normal. The spike in temperature came hours after the city recorded a significant dip in the minimum temperature on Friday morning.
In what left city residents sweltering under hot and humid conditions in the peak winter month of January, the maximum temperature saw a spike of 5.2 degrees above normal on Friday afternoon. Data furnished by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) showed that while the Santacruz station recorded 36 degrees Celsius, Colaba’s coastal observatory recorded 33.5 degrees Celsius.
According to Met records, this was Mumbai’s hottest January day since 2016 when the day temperature had soared to 37.3 degrees Celsius on January 1. Prior to Friday, the city had previously recorded 36 degrees Celsius on January 24 in 2016. For the record, Mumbai’s warmest January day ever was recorded in 2006 at 37.4 degrees Celsius.
Incidentally, the rise in temperature on the heels of a significant drop in night-time temperature. On Friday morning, Mumbai woke up to a minimum temperature of 16.7 degrees Celsius — a significant drop from two days ago when the minimum temperature had oscillated over 20 degrees Celsius.
Senior meteorologists attributed the anomalous rise in temperatures to the influx of easterly winds during the day time.
On the stark variation in temperatures during the day and night, Sunil Kamble, director of IMD Mumbai, said, “While we are receiving easterlies during the day which has led to a spike in temperatures, the city is also receiving a good influx of northerlies during the night. The northerly winds have brought down minimum temperatures.”
Respite from high temperatures is likely to elude the city over the weekend at least with the temperatures slated to hover in the 35-36 degrees Celsius range for the next two days. “After two days, the temperatures will eventually start dipping,” Kamble told The Indian Express.
In its forecast bulletin, meanwhile, the weather bureau said the minimum temperatures will continue to remain low in the range of 18-19 degrees Celsius.
