Heavy rain batters city, schools, colleges, govt offices shut: Top 10 updates on Mumbai weather today

Several parts of Mumbai received more than 200 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours, with Vikhroli in the eastern suburbs recording the heaviest rainfall at 255 mm

Torrential rains across Mumbai and neighbouring districts on Tuesday caused waterlogging on key roads, slowed down traffic and local train services, affecting normal life in the city.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a holiday for all schools and colleges for the day following a ‘red’ alert issued by India Meteorological Department (IMD), forecasting extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places across the city. The BMC also announced the closure of government and semi-government offices on Tuesday and appealed to private offices, institutions and establishments to allow their employees to work from home.

In the past 24 hours, several parts of Mumbai received more than 200 mm rainfall, with Vikhroli in the eastern suburbs recording the heaviest rainfall at 255 mm, followed by 241 mm rain in Byculla, and 222 mm rain in Juhu, as per IMD data.

Citing the severe impact of the inclement weather, the Mumbai Police has appealed to residents to only step out of their homes “if necessary”.

    IMD's weather forecast today

    The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Tuesday issued a 'red' alert, forecasting "very heavy to extremely heavy" rainfall in the city and suburbs of Mumbai with occasional gusty winds reaching 45-55 kmph.

    An orange alert has been sounded for Wednesday. The intensity of rain will recede only after Thursday, when a “yellow” alert will remain in place, the weather agency said.

    Over 200 mm rainfall recorded in the past 24 hours

    Mumbai recorded over 200 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours, with the IMD's Santacruz station lodging 223 mm of rain, while Colaba station received 110 mm of rain.

    At 255 mm, the heaviest rainfall was recorded over Vikhroli in eastern suburbs, followed by 241 mm rain in Byculla, and 222 mm rain in Juhu.

    Records showed that the heaviest rainfall was recorded over western suburbs at an average of 238.19 mm, followed by 208.78 mm in the eastern suburbs, and 186.43 mm in the island city division. Thane, meanwhile, witnessed a total of 223.73 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours.

    More than 300 mm rainfall in some pockets of Mumbai in the past 24 hours

    Some pockets of Mumbai received a massive quantum of 300 mm rainfall over the past 24 hours, according to the BMC's automatic weather station records.

    In the past 24 hours, Chincholi in western suburbs received over 369 mm rainfall, followed by Dadar in island city receiving 300 mm rainfall.

    Coming close to the 300-mm mark, Chembur received 297 mm rain, while Vikhroli station recorded 293 mm and Powai lodged 290 mm.

    About 80 incidents of wall collapse, tree collapse, short circuits in past 24 hours

    Besides waterlogging on multiple roads, at least 80 untoward incidents of wall collapse, tree collapse and short circuits were reported across Mumbai between Monday and Tuesday amid heavy rainfall.

    At least one person was killed and another was injured in these incidents.

    Of the total incidents, 39 were reported to be of tree collapses, 11 of them were of house/wall collapse, and 30 of them pertained to short circuits across the city.

    Schools, colleges, govt offices shut today

    In view of relentless rains, all schools and colleges in the city will remain shut on Tuesday.

    As per the BMC statement, the decision applies to all of its offices and state-run establishments, excluding essential services.

    The Directorate of Higher Education has also declared a holiday for all senior colleges in the Konkan region of Maharashtra. The order applies to colleges in Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts.

    Private office employees asked to work from home today

    Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti early today appealed to the citizens to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.

    Over a post on X, he said, "Good Morning Mumbai, Hope you are adhering to the safety guidelines in wake of the heavy showers expected today." "Please take care, step out only if necessary, prevent going near the shore during high tide and don't forget, you will find us around the corner for help, in case of any emergency," the official said.

    Requesting the private sector to enable work from home as much as possible, he added.

    Local train, bus services disrupted amid waterlogging

    Local train services in Mumbai were delayed, and the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking's bus services were diverted at a few locations due to submerged roads, officials told news agency PTI.

    Waterlogging was reported on railway tracks in low-lying areas of Dadar, Matunga, Parel and Sion, which was later, denied by railway officials, who claimed the water was below the track level and hence train movement was unaffected though the services were delayed, PTI reported.

    There was an early morning technical snag in the signalling system between Ambivali and Shahad stations on the Mumbai suburban network, as per the report.

    Local trains on the Central Railway's main line were running late by 10 minutes and on the harbour line trains by 5 minutes around 8 am, as per a CR spokesperson. A Western Railway spokesperson told PTI their suburban services were running a little late due to poor visibility.

    Waterlogging reported in several pockets across Mumbai

    Residents remained furious as various roads across Mumbai were submerged and traffic movement was disrupted since early morning on Tuesday.

    Intense downpour in several parts of the city, including Borivali, Andheri, Sion, Dadar and Chembur, resulted in water-logging in low-lying areas, including Gandhi Market, as per PTI. All agencies in the city have been put on 'high' alert.

    Mumbai Central, Parel, Grant Road, Malabar Hill, Dadar, Worli and some other areas recorded 40 mm to 65 mm rainfall in just an hour, leading to water-logging at many places, PTI report stated. Waterlogging was also reported at Hindmata, Andheri Subway and in some parts of the Eastern Express Highway, Mumbai-Gujarat highway and the Eastern Freeway, it added.

    Water levels of Mithi river in Kranti Nagar touches 'danger' mark, evacuation underway

    A team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is currently evacuating residents in Kurla's Kranti Nagar, a low lying slum on the airport land, after water levels of the Mithi river touched 'danger' mark on Tuesday.

    BMC officials said that residents are being shifted to a nearby shelter site at Magan Nathuram Civic School.

    Flights delayed, travelers advised to start in advance while heading to airport

    In view of incessant rainfall, Indian airline IndiGo early Tuesday informed its travelers of delays in departure and arrival of flights at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

    It has also advised the passengers to keep additional time while traveling to the airport, citing waterlogging and slow traffic movement.

    Akasa Air also advised its passengers to leave a little early from their residences to reach the airport on time.
