After receiving heavy downpour over the past week, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the intensity of rainfall is slated to reduce gradually in the city this week. In its latest bulletin, no warnings have been issued for Mumbai district after Wednesday, even as its neighbouring districts like Thane and Raigad continue to be placed under a yellow alert, until the weekend.

Data from the weather bureau showed that after receiving light showers until Monday morning, the IMD’s Santacruz station recorded 2 mm rain between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Monday, while the Colaba coastal observatory registered no rainfall.

According to the IMD, isolated pockets of Mumbai will continue to receive heavy downpour with a yellow alert sounded until Wednesday morning, following which the intensity showers will subdue to moderate.

Weather experts have attributed the slowing down of rainfall to the lack of adequate active systems which trigger monsoon currents. Even as Mumbai will experience a relative lull, its neighbouring districts of Thane and Raigad have been placed under a yellow alert until Friday, owing to possibility of heavy showers.

So far, Mumbai has already clocked in over 80 per cent of its average rainfall for June with the Colaba station having received 484 mm rain while the Santacruz station has logged 431 mm. Typically, the city’s Santacruz station receives an average of 537 mm rain while the Colaba observatory records 542 mm rainfall in June.
