Mumbai has registered three more H1N1 deaths, taking the toll across the state to 34,while 10 critical patients remain on ventilator in Pune and Mumbai.

Two girls — two-month-old Rizwana and 12-year-old Anita — and 37-year-old Oto Jain, all having acquired the virus locally, died in the city. Rizwana,a resident of Byculla, was admitted to the BYL Nair Hospital on August 13. Health officials said she had been suffering from cold and cough for a fortnight and fever since a week before her admission to Nair Hospital.

She was given antibiotics but since she was not responding to them,Tamiflu syrup was started on August 15. She was also put on ventilator support. She died of bacterial pneumonia on Friday night when the administration received her H1N1 positive report.

Anita,a resident of Marol, was suffering from fever since August 10,for which she took treatment from a private doctor. Anita, who has a history of chronic asthma, had reported low platelet count. She later went to a private hospital, which referred her to the civic-run Kasturba Hospital on August 17. She too died on Friday night. Health officials said both the girls had pneumonitis.

Oto Jain was admitted to a private nursing home in Kandivali with fever and chills on August 10. When she reported breathlessness on August 11,the hospital collected her throat swab and sent to Kasturba Hospital for testing. Health officials said she had refused to get admitted to Kasturba Hospital, following which she was shfted to a private hospital. After receiving her throat swab, the civic administration provided her with Tamiflu. She died on August 19,two days after being tested positive.

Manisha Mhaiskar, additional municipal commissioner, said the BMC doctors had found that children, senior citizens, pregnant women, people with asthma, diabetes, blood pressure and heart problems were more susceptible to the virus.
