Maharashtra government has formed a committee for establishment of the first Marathi Language University in the state. The objective is to prepare a roadmap for the university, which will come up in Ridhapur village of Amravati district, as announced by the government earlier this year.

The village is considered the birthplace of Marathi literature as the first manuscript in Marathi — Leela Charitra — was written there.

The six-member committee, headed by Sadanand More, renowned litterateur and chairman of Maharashtra Rajya Sahitya and Sanskriti Mandal, will focus on several aspects for establishing the university such as — creating a general structure along with formation of different departments, sending proposal to University Grants Commission (UGC), deciding on courses to run in these departments by ensuring that they are in line with the National Education Policy 2020, providing recommendations for employment opportunities for students, framing policies on opportunities for making higher education available in Marathi language in future, among others.

The state Higher and Technical Education department on Tuesday issued a Government Resolution (GR) declaring the formation of the committee. “After government has already announced the establishment of the Marathi Language University, this committee of experts is responsible for creating a structure for this university. It was part of the recommendations under Marathi Language Policy 2023; this committee will now work on detailed plan of action starting from whether this will be a single institution or affiliating body, types of courses to run and career opportunities students etc,” said More, who was also part of the advisory committee for the Marathi Language Policy 2023.

The committee had submitted its final recommendations earlier this year following which it was announced that the university will be set up in Ridhapur village.
