Weighing at 62 tonnes, the first consignment of steel that will be used for assembling Gokhale bridge’s north side girder arrived at Andheri on Friday night. The arrival of this consignment of steel will now allow officials to go ahead with the assembling works of the girder, which is the final task before launching it.
Meanwhile, according to civic officials, more consignment of steel is being transported to Mumbai for the construction of this girder, which is slated to arrive in next few weeks.
Gokhale bridge, a primary east-west link in the western suburbs, was dismantled due its poor structural health. Since the bridge passed over railway lines, the bridge was dismantled in phases between December and March.
Civic officials added that construction work of the second girder, for the south side, will commence in Ambala shortly. With the process of the procurement of steel underway, the portion of the second girder will likely arrive in the city by February, following which assembling will be done.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) awarded work for construction of the new bridge to Mumbai-based AB Infrabuild Ltd. The contractor has given the fabrication work to Ambala-based HMM Infra Ltd.
Earlier in the month, it had been reported that the fabrication work on Gokhale bridge was likely to be delayed by a month owing to floodwaters which had entered the workshop in Ambala, wherein fabricated steel structure of the new bridge is being constructed and assembled.
Meanwhile, on July 6, the BMC officials along with BJP MLA Ameet Satam had carried out an inspection of the construction work at the Gokhale bridge, following which the civic officials had claimed that they were eyeing to open three lanes of the bridge by Diwali, this year.
