Highlighting that the PSF was not involved in the gathering, the public statement states that it is their support for students' right to express themselves.

Days after Mumbai Police registered an FIR against students of Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS) for allegedly commemorating the death anniversary of former Delhi University professor G N Saibaba on October 12, the Progressive Students Forum (PSF), a Left-leaning students group active on campus has issued a statement condemning the action taken by the institute administration. Claiming that the action “criminalises student expression”, the PSF has demanded immediate withdrawal of the complaint.

Highlighting that the PSF was not involved in the gathering, the public statement states that it is their support for students’ right to express themselves. “The right to think, speak, remember, and disagree cannot be subject to administrative permission or police sanction,” reads the statement.

The event was an informal gathering according to those students who attended it on Sunday. Soon after the event, images from the gathering were shared on social media where multiple posts questioned the TISS administration for allowing an event in memory of G N Saibaba who was accused of helping Naxals, following which an FIR was filed with Trombay police station which is conducting the investigation.

While there is no arrest in this case as yet, the PSF statement alleges that the police inquiry is an intrusion into students’ personal spaces with inspection of their personal belongings and devices, acts which violate the rights to privacy and the dignity of an individual.

Further criticising the TISS administration for facilitating police involvement rather than resolving the matter through dialogue, the public statement issued by PSF alleged a broader campaign to silence dissent on campus. “The repeated acts of censorship and intimidation over the last few years have already tarnished the reputation of TISS. The institute, once known for producing committed social scientists, is now accused of silencing its students,” it stated.

The TISS administration, however, has refrained from commenting anything on the allegations by the PSF stating that the process of investigation is currently underway.
