To step up security of women commuters in local trains, the Government Railway Police (GRP) has constituted three teams of 14 women personnel under the Nirbhaya squad to man compartments reserved for women commuters on Western Railway. Similar teams already exist on Central Railway. “Special women GRP teams have been constituted under the Nirbhaya squad for women commuters on WR and five commando groups will also be patrolling stations,” said Dr. Ravindra Kumar Singal, Commissioner of Police (Railways).
The commissioner said that GRP is assessing vulnerable locations at stations, including those which are dimly lit, to increase patrolling there and also have continuous deployment at those locations.
Singal said that GRP has identified areas where a high number of chain snatching cases are reported.
“We are also preparing a databank where the pictures and related details of the accused are circulated among the staff so that cops at all stations are aware of the accused,” said the commissioner.
The GRP is also working on collaborating with mohalla committees and passenger groups to improve monitoring of stations and trains.
“Often people witness incidents of harassment and take pictures or videos. However, such evidence may not reach us. We will be working with passenger groups so that they can help us in improving monitoring at stations,” said Singal.
