Fishermen up in arms against plan to reclaim coastal land

Members of the fishermen’s colony in Cuffe Parade will oppose any move by the state government to reclaim coastal land, especially in Girgaum Chowpatty,as the sea from Walkeshwar to the beach is a major breeding ground for big fish and will hurt fishing activity if reclaimed.

Last week,Ronald Waterman,an expert from Holland, had made a presentation to Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan suggesting how a portion of the sea near Gateway of India,Malabar Hill and Marine Drive among other areas, could be reclaimed and developed. However,Chavan said, getting environmental clearance for any such project would be a difficult task.

“Environmental clearance won’t be the only hurdle. We will also oppose any reclamation,” said Damodar Tandel, president of the Akhil Maharashtra Machhimar Kriti Samiti. “Although there isn’t much fishing activity at Girgaum Chowpatty, the place being a breeding ground, reclamation of land there will affect fishing across the coast of Maharashtra.”

The organisation plans to stage a massive protest rally involving fishermen from all over the Konkan strip if the state government goes ahead with any project involving reclamation of coastal land.

“Years ago,Vasantrao Naik, the then chief minister, had reclaimed coastal areas such as Nariman Point and Cuffe Parade, and the fishermen have seen a substantial drop in fishing activity due to the reclamation,” Tandel said.
