A day after manager of a wine shop in Lalbaug was shot at,another case of firing was reported on Wednesday when three assailants fired at the manager of a jewellery shop in the upmarket Lokhandwala and fled. Prashant Chabbriya, manager of Mahesh Notandass Jewellers near Infinity Mall, was hit in his abdomen and was rushed to Kokilaben Ambani Hospital where he is undergoing treatment, police said. According to the police, the incident took place at around 1 pm when Chabbriya was in his shop. Three men came to Chabbriyas shop and asked the watchman to send him out as they had some work with him. The armed guard was out for lunch at the time and only the unarmed watchman was present. When the watchman inquired about them and their purpose of meeting, the trio got abusive and started arguing with him, a police officer from Oshiwara police station said. Hearing the raised voices,Chabbriya who was behind the counter stepped out to check what was happening. When he approached the trio to asked them what the problem was,one of them took out a pistol and fired one round at him, hitting him in the left side of his abdomen. The staff of the shop rushed Chabbriya to the hospital, said the police officer. After the firing, the trio fled away and we suspect they must have stashed their getaway vehicles nearby. One of the assailants, who had actually fired the weapon, accidentally dropped the weapon while fleeing but didnt stop to retrieve it. We have taken the weapon in our custody. It is a country-made revolver with five rounds left in the chamber, said the police officer. The police have registered a case of attempt to murder and other sections under the Arms Act. We will also question the manager and the owner of the shop to verify if they had received any extortion calls or something of that nature in the past, the officer said.
