The final safety inspection of Phase 1 of Mumbai Metro Line 2B will be conducted by the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) on Wednesday. This is the final check before the line can be opened to commuters by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), subject to completion of all compliance issues.
The corridor will take a step ahead to open for commercial operations once the CMRS approves after scrutiny, sources said. Phase 1 of Line 2B is 5.39 kilometres long between Mandale and Diamond Garden, spanning five stations. It is a part of the broader DN Nagar-Mandale corridor intended to enhance connectivity in the eastern suburbs.
This round of inspections is in addition to a previous safety check carried out on July 4, when the CMRS team inspected the line infrastructure and equipment. During that visit, officials inspected the overhead electric equipment, signalling and communication systems, track geometry and station facilities. Civil structures such as platforms, emergency response systems and passenger safety arrangements were also inspected.
After the July inspection, CMRS had submitted a checklist of observations for MMRDA to correct. Officials had said at the time that a final inspection would follow after remedial work and operations could only be allowed once all requirements were fulfilled.
Officials from MMRDA stated that all rectifications have been done, making way for the inspection to be held smoothly. This would be the final stage of inspection before passenger service can be started and as soon as they get clearance from CMRS, the line will be ready to open.
Metro Line 2B, Phase 1 is expected to open to the public by December this year while the entire line will be fully operational by 2027. The project has been divided into phases to expedite operations on completed sections, with the Mandale to Diamond Garden stretch being the first to move towards commissioning.
Safety clearance by the CMRS is a necessary precondition prior to any metro line in India being opened for public use.
