Fast times: Kasab now wants a watch for Ramzan

Ajmal Amir Kasab now wants a watch to keep track of time,so that he can keep fast during the month of Ramzan.

Ajmal Amir Kasab now wants a watch to keep track of time,so that he can keep fast during the month of Ramzan. The Pakistani gunman, facing trial in the 26/11 case,on Monday informed the special sessions court that he wanted a watch in his cell so that he could break his fast at the proper time every day during the holy month.

Kasab’s lawyer Abbas Kazmi on Monday pleaded before the court that a watch be provided to Kasab and handed over a Ramzan timetable, mentioning sunrise and sunset times,to be given to Kasab. The court stated that as there is still time before Ramzaan,a decision could be taken before that.

Kasab, who is in solitary confinement inside the Arthur Road Jail, has been provided nothing in his cell barring a few books and a copy of the Quran. Quoting the rules in the jail manual for such prisoners, jail sources said it would be difficult to provide Kasab with a watch, unless the court decides so.

Today,Kazmi also handed over four more books to the court to be given to Kasab. The books, all written by a Pakistani writer, have been published in Delhi. “All the four are short stories meant for light reading,” Kazmi said.

The four books are Kalisa Aur Aag (Cross and Fire),Kafile-e-hejaz (Caravan of Hejaz),Kaisar va Kusra (Romantic Story) and Dastane Mardene Hur. Recently Kazmi had given him four books, all suggested by Kasab himself.

Masked guards
The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) guarding Kasab are now guarding themselves from the H1N1 virus. The ITBP men were on Monday seen wearing masks while guarding the prison. They are posted round-the-clock inside the Arthur Road Jail, which is close to Kasturba Hospital where swine flu patients have been quarantined.
