In a relief to commuters using bikes to reach Thane railway station,Central Railway (CR) has decided to build a multi-storey parking facility on the west side of the station by 2015.
It will be the first such facility at a suburban station.
Mukesh Nigam, divisional manager,CR,said,Around 1,700 bikes are parked on west side of station every day. The multi-storey parking facility will be connected to the upper deck built under station area traffic improvement scheme (SATIS) for commuters to directly access the foot over-bridge (FOB) to go to platforms.
The parking lot is a part of the station improvement plan. Thane station, according to a recent survey by Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation,is the busiest in the city.
As a part of the plan for which Rs 10 crore has been sanctioned,a new administrative building will be constructed at the south end of the station on the west side to create space for a spiral ground-plus-one parking lot. The first floor will be at the level of the upper deck built for bus movement under SATIS.
The ground floor will be circulating area while the first floor, reserved for parking, will be linked to the FOB at the south end of the station.
The FOB will also have ticket booking windows,so that commuters can park vehicles, purchase tickets and go to the desired platform in a seamless manner.
Presently, bikes are parked in a small lot on the west side of the station,in a manner that leaves hardly any space in between.
