Exams near, engineering students await previous results

First and final year students of engineering courses offered by Mumbai University are a worried lot as their results for the previous semester exams held in January 2011 and December 2010 respectively are yet to be declared.

First and final year students of engineering courses offered by Mumbai University are a worried lot as their results for the previous semester exams held in January 2011 and December 2010 respectively are yet to be declared.

While first-year students are awaiting results of the first semester exams,final-year students are awaiting results of the fifth semester exams. With exams for the next semester scheduled to begin on May 15,the delay means students will be left with no time to apply for re-evaluation. Irked students have now written to the Governor, also the chancellor of the university.

According to the authorities in the university’s exam section, many examiners did not report for paper assessment duty and assessment is incomplete for many subjects. The university had in March promised that this year, all pending results will be declared by April 10. However, according to university sources, the tussle between the examination department and evaluators over the implementation of a new barcode system has led to the standoff.

A final-year student from Vidyalankar Institute of Technology said,“This year, the university had promised to declare the results much in advance with new systems implemented, but they have failed yet again.”

Pritesh Meshram,a first-year student, said,“It is a well-known fact that every year hundreds of students find errors in the evaluation of their papers. However, this year if we get less marks or fail in an exam,we will have to appear for the ‘allowed to keep term’ exams,as we are left with no time to get our papers re-evaluated.”

According to the Maharashtra Universities Act,1994,results must be declared within 30-45 days from the concluding date of the examination. However,MU has time and again failed to declare results on time. In fact last year, the university had set a record delay in declaring the results of TY BCom students.

The university has also introduced an optical marks reader for data feeding this year, which will help them reduce the time consumed for evaluation by a week. They have also implemented the barcode system, which they claimed will streamline processing of computerised results in minimal time. This system, too, has seemed to fail with fewer numbers of approved teachers participating in the evaluation process.

Last year, the varsity had set up code of conduct to deal with the the problem of teachers not reporting for assessment work. The Maharashtra Universities Act,1994,stipulates that disciplinary action must be initiated against defaulters. However,it does not elaborate on what measures should be taken to prevent this.

Vilas Shinde, the controller of examination, said,“The examiners have not reported for evaluation duty. We will take disciplinary action against such teachers. We are trying to get the names of defaulters who have not reported for work. Their details will be given to their respective colleges, which will also have to take action against them. As far as the declaration of results is concerned for the final year, results of subjects like computers, information technology, electronics and telecommunication are awaited. Results for the rest of the subjects are out. However, results for all first year subjects are pending.”
