A sessions court in a recent order rejected a plea filed by corporate lawyer Janhavi Gadkar, seeking permission to sell a car allegedly driven by her on June 10, 2015, which caused an accident on the Eastern Freeway. While the court returned the car — an Audi Q3 — to Gadkar in December 2015 in an interim order, the former has recently sought permission for its sale. Opposing the move, police said that the trial in the case was yet to commence. According to the court, the car was vital evidence, and following the permission to sell it, the vehicle will not remain in the court's custody. "It will not be possible (after the sale) to secure production of the vehicle before the court, if required. It is nowhere contention of the applicant (Gadkar) that the production of the vehicle will not be seriously disputed by the accused," said the court, adding that it was not clear whether the condition or the existence of the vehicle will become a contentious issue during the trial. Police have claimed that Gadkar on June 10, 2015, was allegedly driving the vehicle on the freeway in an inebriated state, causing the death of two persons travelling a taxi. The trial in the case is yet to begin.
