After the management of Hurkisondas Hospital recently announced that it will soon be shutting down,619 employees have been planning to protest against their abrupt job termination. On Thursday, the hospital management issued a notice stating the hospital will be shutting down for renovation and employees were asked to discontinue their services.
Citing a Rs 90-crore loss, reduced patient inflow and unstable hospital structures, the notice asked all the employees to vacate hospital premises over the next 45 days for repair work to take place. The four unions of the hospital have been holding meetings with the management over the past four days and said they will stage protests if their demands are not met.
We have not been promised recruitment after the renovation work is complete. The management has said the work might take more than three years, said Ramchandra Gawde, unit president of the Maharashtra Samarth Kamgar Sanghatana, led by Nitesh Rane. Why cant they renovate the hospital in phases, like in the case of KEM hospital? They are neither giving us temporary employment elsewhere nor agreeing to take us back post-renovation, he said.
Members of the other three hospital unions have also demanded a renewal of their five-year job contract, which would imply an increase in their wages. Our contract expired in July after which the management did not renew it. We have been working on the previous contracts salary for the last six months, said Ravindra Virlekar from Akhil Mumbai Rugnalay Karmachari Sangh.
