A group of unidentified persons attacked an elderly couple and their daughter in Virar on Monday following which police have launched a hunt for the accused. The victims were seriously injured and are undergoing treatment in a hospital, police said. While the reason for the attack is yet to be ascertained, police said that no items were stolen from the house. The injured were identified as Jagannath Gowari, 76, his wife Leela Gowari, 72 and their daughter Netra Gowari, 52, who live in Arnala's Bandarpada village. The incident happened around 3.30 am on Monday when the elderly couple and their daughter were sleeping in the house. According to police, the accused entered the house and attacked the trio with sharp objects. When Leela ran out screaming for help, the neighbours reached there. However, by that time, the attackers had fled the spot, said a police officer. Both Jagannath and Netra were severely injured in the attack, said Deputy Commissioner of Police Suhas Bhavche. The neighbours then informed the police who reached the spot and rushed the injured to the nearby Sahyog hospital, added Bhavche. The Arnala police registered a case of attempt to murder and further probe was underway. No valuables were stolen from the house, police said, adding that personal rivalry or property dispute could be the reason behind the attack. The couple's son Sachin Gowari, 45, lives in Agashi village and runs a tution class.
