AN EIGHT-YEAR-OLD boy was run over by a speeding BMC garbage dumper on Tuesday morning. The Shivaji Nagar police have registered an FIR against the dumper driver who was later placed under arrest. Locals in the area have complained about the menace of speeding dumper drivers near the dumpyard and have sought speed breakers to be put up on the road.
An officer from Shivaji Nagar police station said the incident took place around 10.30 am in the Zakir Hussain Nagar area when Hamid Ansari had returned home from a madrasa. He was to get ready to go to school. He wanted to go to the washroom that was on the other side of the road. It was while crossing the road that the dumper knocked him down.
The body lay motionless on the road following which locals rushed him to the nearby hospital where he was declared dead. The local Shivaji Nagar police was alerted about the issue following which an FIR was registered by the police based on the statement given by the boy’s family members.
The boy’s uncle Mohammad Irfan said that his father is a tailor and they have been residing at the spot for several years. “The road directly connects to the dumping ground where garbage vans come to dump garbage. This particular vehicle had emptied its contents and was going to the parking lot when the incident took place.”
He added, “These van drivers drive fast and rash which pose a security issue for us. We have demanded that four to five speed breakers be put up on the road and a speed limit be imposed or else more such accidents will take place in the future.”
