DRI officers Tuesday said they recently received specific intelligence that a syndicate is involved in the smuggling of gold into India with the help of two Indian passengers.
Acting on the information, surveillance was mounted by a team of DRI officers at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai.
The two passengers, who had arrived in Mumbai from Dubai on Emirates Flight EK 500 on May 15, were intercepted. They were searched and gold in paste form was seized from their possession, the officers said.
“A total of 3,535 grams gold in paste form was found concealed inside four plastic pouches, wrapped with black tape,” DRI said.
“Further probe has revealed that both of them are part of the same syndicate operating out of Dubai. The syndicate was involved in smuggling substantial quantities of gold on a daily basis,” a DRI officer said.
Both fliers have been arrested under relevant sections of the Customs Act.
