The Railways has decided to issue fresh contract applications for the repair and maintenance of doorframe metal detectors (DFMD) at various stations under the suburban section of the Central Railways, almost a year after the warranty that included the maintenance and repair of the same.

After 7/11 terror strike,75 DFMDs were installed in the suburban section. The maximum number of DFMDs,29, were installed at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. Of these,27 were installed by RPF and are also monitored by them while two were installed by the Wireless Department and are monitored by Railway police.

According to railway sources,”the RPF had purchased 75 DFMDs from two companies — Smarth Security System,Mumbai, and SDS,Chandigarh.

The RPF said it would issue fresh contracts to these two firms soon.

Social worker Anwar Khan, who wrote to the assistant commissioner of Mumbai Division RPF,DRM,said,”after noticing most of the DFMS at CST out of function,I wrote to the authorities. But I have not got a reply nor have they repaired the machines.”

While DRM M C Chavan was unavailable for comments, senior divisional security commissioner S C Parhi admitted that the warranty had expired a year ago. However,we are giving fresh contracts to these companies again. In a couple of days they will be on the job.”

He,however, refuted the allegation that most detectors were out of order. “Though the warranty had expired, these firms never discontinued their services. Whenever there was a problem, they were rectified the next day.”
