A 20-year-old domestic help was arrested by the Marine Drive police for allegedly robbing his employers of jewellery and cash worth Rs 46 lakh. The accused, identified as Rajeev Jaat alias Bhagwan Lal,was arrested from his village in Rajasthan.
Police said Jaat was hired a month before the incident occurred on December 9.
Jaat who worked at the house of Suresh Jain,a jeweller by profession, was hired by Jain after their previous help left. Jaat had previously worked with the family for more than a year, said senior police inspector Z M Gharal.
Gharal said Jaat had observed the movement of the family for almost one month before he made his move. After both husband and wife left for work,Jaat fled with diamond jewellery and cash worth almost Rs 46 lakh, said Gharal.
Teams were formed to nab Jaat soon after a complaint was filed at the Marine Drive police station. It was difficult to trace him as we didnt have his picture. He had even told his acquaintances in Rajasthan to switch off their phones. After hours of detailed investigations,we got a lead that led us to his native village in Rajasthan, Gharal said.
A police team arrested Jaat from Rajasthan and brought him back to Mumbai, where he was produced in court.
The court has remanded Jaat in police custody until December 21. We have also managed to recover the stolen items. Apart from Rs 10,000,which he spent, the remainder of the amount and jewellery has been recovered, said Gharal.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1) Cherring Dorje said this case further highlights the need to verify domestic help before hiring them.
Many people do not bother to check the credentials of their help and are at times robbed by the persons they hired. Verifying domestic helps will help in nabbing them if they escape after a robbery or a murder, said Dorje.
