When the Sheriffs Scholarships for Women are awarded on Thursday, among the recipients will be Divya Salaskar, daughter of encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar, who was killed in the 26/11 attacks last year.
The scholarships, sponsored by the University of Westminster, will be given to Divya and four other girls on Thursday at the Office of the Sheriff of Mumbai. This scholarship is given to women who want to pursue a Masters degree in London, regardless of their personal backgrounds or circumstances. Women with first class degree from a reputed institution, who were proficient in English, were eligible to apply for these scholarships.
As a Sheriff, the best gift that I could give Divya was a good career and for that a good education and global exposure is needed, said the Sheriff of Mumbai,Dr Indu Shahani. Divya (21) has completed her BCom from Ruparel College and is going to the University of Westminster to pursue her post graduation in HRM (Human Resource Management).
She wanted to do her MBA,so I asked her to apply for the scholarship and also sent a recommendation for her. She is a bright girl who has done well in BCom and has also got good IELTS scores, said Shahani.
Of the five scholarships being given this year, two full scholarships include tuition fees, accommodation and air fare and are over £25000 each (Rs 20,00,000). Two other scholarships include full tuition fee waivers. The additional scholarship being given to Divya Salaskar is a full scholarship, which includes monthly allowance.
The Sheriffs Scholarship for Women was introduced last year and was given to six girls who are currently in London pursuing their Masters Degree programme. All girls are from very modest background, with one of the girls being the daughter of a maid servant.
