A special court, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), has sought a detailed report from the dean of state-run J J Hospital on the health status and hospitalisation of two of the accused arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a loan case linked to DHFL fraud.

In a letter to the hospital, the court has sought to know the details of treatment provided to Pune-based businessman Avinash Bhosale and Sanjay Chhabaria, both arrested by the ED in the case.

Special Judge M G Deshpande urged the hospital to submit all medical papers of the two men to the court. The court, meanwhile, said that several days after the duo was sent to judicial custody, the medical officer and jail superintendent took immediate cognisance of the illness reported by them and forthwith referred them to J J Hospital. It sought a report from the hospital to find out Bhosale’s illness and the treatment, which could not be treated in the hospital jail ward and he had to be referred to civic-run St George Hospital. It also sought to know how many prisoners — with similar illness as Bhosale — were admitted to the hospital for such a long period of time; and why could not he recover despite continuous hospitalisation and treatment, that too in a separate room.

In Chhabria’s case too, the court sought to know why he could not recover despite continuous treatment. Previously, the court had pulled up the authorities concerned for prolonged hospital stays of high-profile accused, with investigating agencies seeking reports on their health status.
