A 48-year-old dentist was sentenced to life imprisonment by a sessions court on Monday for the murder of his estranged wife in 2016. Among the evidence considered by the court was the couple’s then four-year-old son who had witnessed the incident.

As per the prosecution led by special public prosecutor, RV Kini, the couple married in 2009 and their son was born in 2012. The prosecution claimed that due to disputes between them, they lived separately for a few months, and in 2016, the victim had filed a case against the accused alleging domestic violence.

In the same year, the victim and her son began living with the accused’s maternal aunt as it was easier for her to commute to her workplace and drop her soon to school.

As per the evidence submitted to court by the aunt, the accused and the victim had met and gone out a couple of times before the incident for dinner and films. On the day of the incident too, on December 10 in 2016, the accused had come to pick up his wife and son, saying he was taking them out for a film and dinner. Thereafter, they went to the residence belonging to the accused.

The couple’s son during his deposition in court in 2020, said that his father killed his mother with a knife in the morning. He also told the court that earlier that night, his father had beaten his mother and had asked him to go to another room. The victim sustained 37 injuries in the attack.

The court considered evidence including that of the victim’s brother, who said the accused was of a suspicious nature and even doubted the paternity of his son due to which a DNA test was conducted to confirm he was his father. Also, a defence witness, a psychiatrist, had said that in 2016, he had treated the accused after diagnosing him with major depressive disorder.
