The next round of the battle between the Sena cousins is set to play out on the campus, with the MNS contesting the Mumbai University senate elections for the first time and the Shiv Sena leading the race in terms of voters registered so far.
Only graduates from the university who register for the election are eligible to vote. The Shiv Sena-led Bhartiya Vidyarthi Sena (BVS) has registered 22,000 voters, around half the total of 43,000,and the Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS) between 7,000 and 10,000.
Senate elections are being held after five years. The schedule is yet to be announced but the polls are expected in August.
This is the highest number of registrations by any party. With such numbers,we will contest all 10 seats and are confident of winning, said Abhijeet Panse,BVS president. The organisation has attributed the high count to the presence of Uddhav Thackerays son Aditya and the keen interest he has shown in the elections.
MNVS vice-president Sandeep Deshpande said they have close to 10,000 registrations and Raj Thackeray will decide later how many candidates they should put up.
The Swabhiman Sanghatana and the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad have registered around 5,500 voters each, and the National Students Union of India (NSUI) and Bombay Graduate Forum has registered about 13,000.
It is a fact that the BVS has registered the largest number, but the official figures and schedule of elections are yet to be announced. It will be a keen contest, said Rajesh Teke of the NSUI.
