Death toll in Dahisar blaze reach 2 in Mumbai

A 40-year-old succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday morning, taking the death toll in the blaze which broke out in a Dahisar high-rise on Sunday up to 2. Civic officials said that a total of 54 persons were injured in the fire, of which 21 are still admitted across several hospitals.

In an incident reported at New Jankalyan Society situated in Shanti Nagar in Dahisar East on September 7, a medium fire broke out in the basement and spread through the electrical duct and wiring up to the third floor. Even as the blaze remained confined to the lower floors, the smoke logged up until the 23rd floor in what left a large number of residents in the building injured. Senior officials from Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) said that the preliminary cause points to a short circuit in the electrical unit.

A 75-year-old senior citizen who was trying to escape to the upper floors was caught in the heat and smoke logged passageway and died in the incident on Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile, over 54 people sustained grievous injuries and were taken to several hospitals across the area.

Two days after the incident, the BMC said that a 40-year-old who had been admitted at Shatabdi hospital was declared dead Tuesday at 7.00 am. The deceased has been identified as Madhu Vinod Patel. Meanwhile, of the 54 persons who were injured, one remains critical while 21 are stable. At least 31 victims have been discharged.

Speaking to The Indian Express, senior officials from the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) said that inspections of the building premises are underway. “While the building has Fire NOC and OC, we observed several obstructions along the passageway of the building. We will decide on further course of action tomorrow, following more inspections,” said MFB officials.

In a bid to aid the rescue operations, the MFB deployed at least eight fire engines, eight jumbo tankers, two special devices like ladders, hydraulic platforms as well as one breathing apparatus on the site.
