The Central Railway (CR) has decided to take certain additional safety precautions to secure the high-tension compartments in its trains,a day after a door flap of one such compartment flung out and critically injured two persons traveling by the Bangalore-bound Udyan Express.
After checking the high-tension compartments of all its rakes during stabling hours, the CR said it will fasten the doors of all such compartments with a chain other than the usual 25 bolts to prevent a similar accident.
We found no problems in most of the rakes, but we are taking additional safety measures to ensure that even if the door is loose,it wont fling out, CR chief spokesman V Malegaonkar said. The high-tension compartment does not form a part of the daily or even the weekly maintenance list. The high tension compartment houses heavy electrical equipment associated with the running of the rake. The door to this compartment is fastened with 25 bolts and is never generally opened even for maintenance purposes.
Chandrabai,34,suffered a severe hand injury and four-year-old Sharun Dev Appa suffered a deep gash on his palm when the door flap of the high-tension compartment of an Ambernath-CST fast train loosened and hit the S-10 compartment of the Udyan Express on Monday.
Both were rushed to Thane Civil Hospital and were later transferred to Fortis in Mulund.
Their surgery is over and both are reported to be in stable condition. We will have to wait for the next few days to make sure they don’t develop any skin infections, Malegaonkar said.
Meanwhile, the CR said it will augment 56 of its nine-car services to 12-car services from Wednesday, effectively making all of its 785 mainline services served by 12-car rakes. Over the last three years, the CR has increased its carrying capacity by 11.3 per cent.
