As the Janmashtami festivities died down on Tuesday,the number of injured persons shot up to 380 from 205 on Monday night. According to the BMC disaster management cell,45 people have been admitted to hospitals across the city. KEM Hospital received around 160 patients in the OPD (out patient department) and admitted 10 persons,mostly for head and bones injuries. JJ,Bhabha and Nair hospitals also treated many persons injured in dahi handi celebrations,mostly in the orthopaedic department.
Three persons admitted in the ICU of Sion Hospital are in critical condition,including six-year-old Vaishnavi Makdum. Possibly the youngest govinda this year,Vaishnavi was injured when the helmet meant to protect her hit her eye and caused a clot in her brain.
Last year,as many as 170 people were injured and two died in the celebrations. This year,the BMC provided free medical aid free to all injured govindas.
