Mumbai Customs paid the penalty for wasting easy chances,including a penalty stroke,to go down 3-4 to a plucky Union Bank of India (UBI) in an evenly balanced league match of the MHAL Super League,at the MHAL Stadium,Churchgate,on Monday evening.
Deepak Bijwad,Vikram Singh,Rubin Kedari and J.P. Kusha scored a goal each for the bankers,while Mumbai Customs got their goals through Deepak Yadav,Joshua Versaonkar and Jayesh Jadhav. However,Jadhav wasted a great opportunity to level the scores at 4-4 when he missed a penalty stroke late in the match.
The win today,was the third for Union Bank in five outings and they now move to the fourth position with nine points,while a depleted Customs suffered their fourth defeat from six matches. They have six points from two win in the earlier rounds.
Earlier in the day,leaders Western Railway consolidated their position at the top after their fluent 6-1 victory against Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers (RCF). The scores were level 1-all at the end of the first half.
Vinod Kumar and consistent scorer Jay Karan struck a brace each and Ashish Pal and Mohd Irshad Mirza scored one apiece to complete the tally. RCF reduced the margin through Manpreet Singh.
Western have won all their six matches and are comfortably perched at the top of the nine-team standings with 18 points,while this was the fourth defeat for RCF in five matches.
Western Railways Arun Beck was named man of the match in the first match of the day and later Union Banks young versatile midfielder Ksh Wangamba was adjudged man of the match in the second encounter. Both players received a cash prize of Rs 1,000 each.
