Crime Branch accepts Salem ‘complaint’

Navi Mumbai crime branch accepted Abu Salem’s supplementary statement as a “complaint” against Devendra Jagtap Sunday

Navi Mumbai crime branch accepted Abu Salem’s supplementary statement as a “complaint” against Devendra Jagtap Sunday. Jagtap is accused of firing two bullets from a smuggled country-made gun at Salem. The team visited him Sunday and recorded his statement.

Salem raised “serious suspicions” about Mustafa Dossa, stressing he was afraid to be in the barracks adjacent to Dossa’s accomplice. “He gave a signed complaint that he has reasons to believe Dossa was a conspirator,” said an officer. Salem said he was settled by his window in barrack number 44 when the first bullet hit the wall behind him,he added.

Meanwhile, police believe Jagtap is trying to send them on a wild goose chase by claiming a friend slipping him the gun in court. “While we will search for the friend,Manoj Lamhane,we will also verify his claims,” said an officer.

Police say it is likely the weapon was smuggled inside the prison on the day of the attack as it would have been difficult to conceal beforehand. “We have done a preliminary search of Jagtap’s barracks and have not found any corner where he could have stored it. Other statements also indicate the weapon was smuggled inside on the same day,” said an officer.

Police will arrest Jagtap on Monday. They are also trying to trace Jagtap’s wife, who has been missing since the day of the attack. Teams have been sent to her native place in Nashik to look for her.
