A week after Mumbai Railway Police commissioner Tukaram Chavan said CCTVs on railway premises need correction and some of them do not even work, the Central Railway has expressed its displeasure over the remarks.
After Chavan made these remarks last week in a press conference, the CR conducted a survey and found out that almost all the 977 cameras and 133 monitors on the suburban section were in a working condition.
Taking a strong objection to Chavans remarks, the CR conveyed its displeasure to the state police.
We did a check and all the cameras were found to be working. We have a contract in place that takes care of all the maintenance issues, said CRs chief spokesperson Vidyadhar Malegaonkar. Incidentally, the CCTV cameras at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) were found to be non-functional during the 26/11 attacks.
When contacted,Chavan said,I did not intend to say anything negative about the Railways since we jointly look after the security arrangements. It is a fact that many cameras do not rotate a full 360 degrees. In the changing crime scenario,it is important to have advanced cameras. It should also help us in cracking the cases.
Both RPF and GRP have had clashes over various security issues in the past. The GRP and Railway Protection Force RPF have to look after security of the Railways. The GRP is supposed to take care of the law and order aspect while the RPF protects the railway property. The CCTVs are provided and managed by the RPF. In case of any suspicious activity, the RPF alerts the GRP.
