IN THE double murders of artist Hema Upadhyay and her lawyer Harish Bhambhani, the Dindoshi sessions court on Friday began recording of the statements of the accused. The court began with the statement of Hema’s estranged husband and main accused, artist Chintan Upadhyay.
While the accused will have to face over 800 questions prepared on the basis of the evidence presented before the court, on Friday, Chintan responded to over 80 questions based on the deposition of the first seven witnesses.
To some questions, Chintan said that he did not know as it did not concern the evidence against him while he denied others.
The examination of the accused under Section 313 of the Criminal Procedure Code starts after the prosecution has closed its case after examining all witnesses. The accused get the opportunity to respond to the specific evidence against them.
Chintan was arrested on December 22, 2015 on charges including murder, destruction of evidence and criminal conspiracy of the Indian Penal Code for the alleged murders.
The bodies of Hema and Bhambhani were found in a box thrown in a nullah in Kandivali on December 12, 2015. Three others are facing trial in the case along with Chintan.
