(Express Photo)A magistrate court in Andheri on Friday dismissed a plea by actor Kangana Ranaut seeking to record the witness statement of her sister Rangoli Chandel before the trial begins in a defamation complaint filed by lyricist Javed Akhtar.
Metropolitan magistrate R M Shaikh passed the order. The court will begin hearing the trial from April 19.
Ranaut, in her plea filed under Section 311 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), submitted that her sister was witness as she was present with her during the meeting which formed the basis of the remarks made by the actor in an interview aired on a TV channel.
Akhtar filed a defamation complaint against Ranaut in 2020. He alleged that Ranaut made defamatory statements on national and international television, “in what appears to be a clear campaign to malign and tarnish (Akhtar) in the eyes of the general public”.
Ranaut said that the earlier magistrate R R Khan had not recorded her sister’s statement and the court ought to examine and record her statement.
However, Akhtar’s counsel opposed the plea and said the same was not maintainable and sought dismissal of the application. Akhtar said that the Bombay High Court, while dismissing Ranaut’s revision plea, had upheld the manner in which prosecution witnesses were examined.
