The Azad Maidan police suspect a property dispute and an underworld hand behind the firing in the office of builder Manish Dholakia in New Marine Lines on Tuesday. A private security guard of Dholakia succumbed to injuries after being shot at by two unidentified men who barged into the office looking for the builder. According to Cherring Dorje, deputy commissioner of police, after the receptionist raised an alarm, the men began running and were intercepted by the deceased security guard,Ajit Yerulkar, who nabbed one of the shooter by his shirt. The assailant removed his shirt and fled. Dorje said they found railway coupons worth Rs 7 from the assailants shirt. The coupons were punched around 10 am from Ghatkopar to CST. We have been trying to identify him by going through the CCTV recordings of the CST station. However, this may not help much,as the accused might have been wearing another shirt while coming out of CST, added Dorje. The shirt has sweat and hair samples on it that would help us analyse the DNA and match it with the existing samples of criminals, said Dorje. When asked who are the suspects in the case,Dorje said that Dholakia does not suspect anybody and has not got any threat call. Dholakia has not reported any such threat before. However,on being probed further,he told us that the office building land in New Marine Lines was under dispute as his uncle Arvind, who is based in Canada, also claimed rights to it. Dholakia said that five years back he had received a call from the underworld regarding the land but that was the last time he received a call in the matter. There are a couple of other plots under dispute too which we are checking, added Dorje. According to the police,at 3:45 pm,two men walked into the office of Dholakia Builders on the third floor of Sharda Chambers in the New Marine Lines area and said they wanted to meet Dholakia. When the receptionist asked who they were, they said they had come from Pune. Meanwhile, one of the two men took out a pistol and started heading towards Dholakias chamber. On seeing this, the receptionist ran out of the office and raised an alarm. Hearing her,two of Dholakias private bodyguards ran into the office. When the bodyguards rushed in,one of the two men fired a round at Yerulkar, which hit him on the chest.
