Cops not acting against abuse: HIV+ woman to HC

An HIV-positive woman, who had complained to the Khar police of harassment by her family after her husband died of HIV-related causes, has now moved the Bombay High Court accusing the police of inaction.

An HIV-positive woman, who had complained to the Khar police of harassment by her family after her husband died of HIV-related causes, has now moved the Bombay High Court accusing the police of inaction.

The woman,30,has been living with her mother, uncle and aunt since her husband’s death in 2004.

She alleges her uncle had arranged the marriage in 2002 without telling her he was HIV-positive; she says she contracted the virus from her husband.

She says her aunt locked her in a room on April 4 and that when her uncle let her out,the aunt assaulted her and told her she ought to die early.

In her court petition, she says she went to the Khar police station on April 19 but the police refused to lodge a complaint. She says she wrote to the DGP as well as the police commissioner and has now urged the court to appoint an officer to investigate her case. “She has only written a letter to the police,” said additional public prosecutor Prajakta Shinde.

The court has sought a reply from the Khar police within two weeks.
