An accident on the Mumbai-Nashik Highway in Shahapur early Tuesday morning claimed the lives of three persons while 14 others were also injured.
The accident took place around 4 am near Goteghar, Shahapur when the driver of a container truck lost control of the vehicle.
The truck, which was en route from Nashik to Mumbai, veered across the highway divider and collided with two oncoming vehicles and a luxury bus parked along the roadside.
Three persons, including two women and one man, died on the spot. Among the injured, eight persons sustained serious injuries. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital with the assistance of locals, while doctors declared three as dead upon arrival.
Among the deceased were Piyush Patil and Vrinda Patil, residents of Amalner in Jalgaon district who were returning to Badlapur from Jalgaon.
Piyush was employed with the BMC, while Vrinda was a trainee teacher. Their five-year-old daughter was also injured.
Local police and rescue teams rushed to the scene and the injured were taken to nearby hospitals.
The accident resulted in a major traffic disruption on the highway even as emergency crew removed the vehicles from the spot.
The Shahapur police have launched an investigation into the accident.
