Construction firm staffer held for staging abduction, robbery

Bhaskar More had claimed that he was waylaid and kidnapped by four unidentified men who robbed him of Rs 55 lakh on March 11.

A day after an office assistant with a construction firm claimed to have been kidnapped and robbed by four unidentified men in south Mumbai, police on Tuesday arrested him for allegedly trying to swindle his employer’s money. Bhaskar More had claimed that he was waylaid and kidnapped by four unidentified men who robbed him of Rs 55 lakh on March 11.

Police grew suspicious when More could not show them the exact spot from where he was allegedly abducted. More has reportedly confessed that he committed the crime to pay for an ailing relative’s treatment as well as to pay his housing loan.

“There were discrepancies every time he narrated the purported crime. He confessed to having staged the robbery,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (South Region) Krishna Prakash.

Police have found that the father-in-law of the accused became an unwitting accomplice, after the accused convinced him to hide the bag containing the money by lying to him about its contents.

Police said More has been working for Soham Builders,Thane, for the past nine years. On Monday,More called the police control room saying he was ferrying Rs 55 lakh of his employer’s money to south Mumbai. He claimed he was forced into a Mahindra Bolero near Qutbe Kokni Makhdoom Ali Mahimi flyover on Monday.

He claimed he was robbed of the bag containing the money and was confined in the moving vehicle for four hours before being released in Khetwadi around 10.30 pm on Monday.

More,in his confession, reportedly said he left his office along with a driver and a chartered accountant and picked up the money in Malabar Hill, after which the driver and the accountant left. He went to his father-in-law Dilip Yadav’s residence in Dombivli and told Yadav that there had been an income tax raid in his office and that the bag contained important documents that should be hidden. Yadav left with the money for his native Ratnagiri and More went to Khetwadi, after which he called the police control room.
