A Mumbai Police constable died and a female colleague sustained injuries after they were run over by a car in Worli on Tuesday morning. Dattatray Kumbhar, 52, and Riddhi Patil, both constables attached to the Worli police station, were soon rushed to Wockhardt Hospital, where he died.
A police officer said the incident took place on the Coastal Road-Bandra Kurla Complex connector in Worli around 7.25 am, when Kumbhar and Patil were on patrolling duty. A Grand i10 came speeding and knocked down the duo, the officer added.
“Unfortunately, Kumbhar, who was hit directly, succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the accident. Riddhi Patil is currently undergoing treatment, and her condition is said to be stable,” a police official said, adding that an FIR had been registered in the matter and the car’s driver, Ramchandra Rane, 46, had been detained.
“An FIR has been registered against the driver and his blood samples have been sent for testing to find out if he was driving under the influence of alcohol,” the officer added. The police are also reviewing CCTV footage from the coastal road to determine the speed at which he was driving.
The police are also questioning the driver to find out if he had been driving through the night and had fallen asleep at the wheel, which led to the incident.
Senior police officers, including Satyanarayan Choudhary, Joint Commissioner of Police (law and order), visited Wockhardt Hospital, where he met family members of the two constables.
A police officer said that the duo were on night shift and that the incident occurred just around the time when their shift was coming to an end.
