A 40-year-old director of a coaching class was arrested by the Azad Maidan police on Saturday for allegedly leaking a fifth semester BCom commerce examination question paper.
According to the police officials, the arrested person has been identified as Rajesh Sharma and he runs a coaching class in Goregaon.
The police said he was apprehended from his residence in the northern suburbs after his role came to light while a laboratory assistant, Rajnikant Gajanan Mourya, was being interrogated. Mourya was arrested in the case in November 2023.
An officer said, “Mourya revealed that Sharma had handed over a copy of the question paper to him, following which he passed it on the students.”
The Azad Maidan police had earlier booked a 20-year-old student and his unidentified accomplice for allegedly cheating during the fifth semester of a third year B Com examination. Although the incident had occurred on October 31, the matter was reported to police on November 2, following which a case of cheating under the Indian Penal Code and the Maharashtra Prevention of Malpractices in University, Board and other Specified Examinations Act was registered.
The FIR read that while the complainant was posted as a junior invigilator in the examination hall, he noticed that one of the students was distracted and as he was suspicious of his behaviour, the examiner checked him thoroughly when he found the commerce V question paper on his mobile phone.
“Answers to objective questions were also written on the mobile phone of the examinee,” said a police officer.
Accordingly, the student’s phone was seized by the examiner, following which he reported the matter to higher officials of the Mumbai University.
While the police were investigating the matter, they were informed that the paper was leaked from a Bhiwandi-based college.
“We then conducted a probe during which Mourya’s role was identified. He was then brought to the police station and arrested. As Mourya had revealed Sharma’s involvement, we verified his role in the crime and even he was arrested on Saturday,” said an officer.
