CJI Chandrachud will retire on November 10. (Photo: Loksatta)Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud will deliver the inaugural lecture in the Loksatta Annual Lecture series in Mumbai on Saturday. He will speak on “Understanding federalism and its potential”.
To commemorate the 75th year of the Constitution, Loksatta has started various initiatives to spread awareness, incorporating analyses from experts on its journey so far. The first edition of the lecture series is dedicated to federalism.
CJI Chandrachud, who will retire on November 10, has served as a judge of constitutional courts for 24 years and has passed several landmark judgments — from the Governor’s role and powers, the State vs Centre conflicts, and the constitutional rights of citizens, among others.
An alumnus of Delhi’s University St. Stephen’s College and Faculty of Law, and later Harvard University, where he did his LLM in 1983 followed by a doctorate in juridical sciences in 1986, he practised as an advocate in the Bombay High Court and Supreme Court.
He served as Additional Solicitor General of India from 1998 to 2000, when he was appointed additional judge of the Bombay HC.
After serving as Bombay HC judge for over 13 years, he was elevated as Chief Justice of the Allahabad HC on October 31, 2013 and later appointed a judge of the Supreme Court on May 13, 2016.
