Chief Minister’s convoy ‘holds up’ traffic, police launch probe

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has apologised for any inconvenience caused to the public.

The Mumbai Police Commissioner has ordered the Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) to submit a detailed report on the chaos caused outside the National Sports Club of India, Worli, on Sunday evening allegedly due to traffic restrictions to allow the passage of the chief minister’s convoy.

However, while Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis apologised for any inconvenience caused to the public, according to BK Upadhyay, joint commissioner of police(traffic), the mayhem was due to the large number of cars which had gathered at the NSCI and not due to the chief minister’s convoy. Upadhyay said, since the parking at the NSCI was full, a large number of cars had parked outside the gate which created traffic problems.

“The cars were haphazardly parked outside the gate as the parking capacity inside the premises of NSCI was full. We have been asked a detailed report on the incident within two days to find out whether there was any lapse” said Upadhyay.

On Sunday evening, traffic policemen stopped public vehicles in Worli outside NSCI, where the chief minister was to attend a function, to clear the route for his convoy, throwing traffic out of gear. People complained that they had been kept waiting for hours and images of massive traffic snarls flooded the social media.

“I don’t believe in VIP culture. Unless there is emergency or real threat perception inputs police shouldn’t trouble the people. My sincere apologies to those who were stopped by police unnecessarily. People in the state have always seen me stopping at traffic signals,” he said.
