According to sources, over 130 accidents were reported from the 20 zones within five years. (Express Photo/File) To ensure road safety and prevent motorists from accidents, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to transform 20 traffic junctions or intersections in Mumbai that are known as ‘black spots’.
Significance of the project
These black spots were identified by the BMC during a joint survey that was carried out during 2021-22. According to sources, over 130 accidents were reported from the 20 zones within five years. Most of these roads are high-speed corridors and preferred by motorists due to easy connectivity between the suburbs and island city.
Some of accident-prone intersections that will be transformed
Amar Mahal Junction; Tilak Nagar; Ghatkopar Intersection of Ghatkopar Andheri Link Road and Eastern Express Highway in Ghatkopar (East); Sion Circle Junction; Sion (West) King Circle Junction; Matunga (East); Chedda Nagar junction; and Ghatkopar (East).
What will BMC do to transform these intersections?
The BMC is set to implement some design changes in the existing alignment of the carriageway. Civic officials said that they would be widening pedestrian crossings and sidewalks, to increase the available space in roads and to minimise the distance between crossings. Refuge areas will be created and traffic rumbles and speed breakers will be introduced to keep a check on speeding vehicles. New road signage will be installed for better safety.
Who all are involved?
The BMC will carry out the alteration work jointly along with Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS), which is the technical assistant partner.
Administration speaks
“These locations are a priority since they record a high number of deaths and injuries compared to other locations in the city. We will introduce design changes at these locations to reduce the number of crashes and save lives. BMC engineers are working along with the BIGRS partners to transform these junctions.” said Ulhas Mahale, deputy municipal commissioner (Infrastructure).
